Kent's Tin Soldiers already have one successful album in the bag and are now poised to take things to the next level.

2010's Telling Tales picked up praise from the likes of Q Magazine, Kerrang! and Rock Sound and packed in enough singles to cultivate a near constant stream of airplay for their music videos on MTV, Scuzz, The Box and Kerrang! TV with Xfm, Kerrang, Q and Absolute radio all rallying to support singles that were crafted in partnership with the world renowned production talents of Greg Brim(...)son (Supergrass, Metallica, Bush) & John Cornfield (Muse, Feeder, Radiohead).

Their sound remains solid. Full of melodic riffs, powerful choruses and driven by a powerhouse of a rhythm section which often sees them compared to bands like the Foo Fighters, Muse and Feeder. There's a timeless quality to it all; rock music with true populist credentials that has the staying power to transgress generations and retain its appeal. 2011 has already seen the band play at numerous events in the UK and abroad including showcases at the Merc store on Carnaby street and a live session at London's Kings Cross station with UBR and Absolute Radio. With more live shows to come and a fan base that's growing quicker than China's economy, this looks to be the year that Tin Soldiers will head out of the shadows and into the mainstream arena.

Now signed to My Major Company UK the band are working with investors to gather the resources required for their second album. The MMC label is a new model in the UK music industry which sees a community of fans and business people invest in talent that has the potential to make them a healthy return. Once they've raised the £100,000 costs for the album, My Major Company UK will then provide the support needed to reach out and promote the bands creation on an international scale.

Tin Soldiers - recent press

Hi all,

Shout For Music - Tin Soldiers / Just What I Needed

http://www.shout4music.com/single-reviews/tin-soldiers-just-what-i-needed.html

British four-piece Tin Soldiers have been receiving a fair amount of praise since the 2010 release of their debut album ‘Telling Tales’, including being named one of Big Cheese Magazine’s best of 2010 and an official introduction in Kerrang! Magazine. But as the band release their new single ‘Just What I Needed’, you can’t help but feel that things aren’t likely to slow down anytime soon for the quartet. The single is a fantastic slice of pop-rock as it brings to mind bands like Sum 41 and even Foo Fighters, which the band actually cite as one of their influences. Opening with fast-paced, driving guitars, the track can also be described as a great salute to post-grunge as it generally emits an awesome and animated type of energy throughout. Of course, the catchiness of the track doesn’t go unnoticed as the band go for an upbeat, stadium-worthy chorus which is sure to go down a storm at future gigs. Currently working on their second album, ‘Just What I Needed’ works as a good taster to what many will be eagerly anticipating. Be sure to catch the boys as they head off on tour this summer for what will surely be a terrific set of shows.

Get Ready To Rock - Tin Soldiers / Just What I Needed

http://abigailsuter.posterous.com/review-of-just-what-i-needed-by-tin-soldiers

Ploughing their way through the ranks of the music industry, Tin Soldiers have been proudly introduced to the readers of Kerrang! and are well on their way to the top. Their debut album, “Telling Tales” was released last year and they’re back with brand spanking new single, “Just What I Needed” to be released on the 18th of April.

The track relies on an extremely upbeat base that is added to by pop-rock style vocals. The chorus is unbelievably catchy and although rather basic and nothing particularly new, it gives an overall good impression of the band and clearly demonstrates their ability to conjure up the perfect rock song similar to something The Foo Fighters are capable of.

Tin Soldiers have already built themselves up quite a fanbase but my expectations are that this will continue to grow significantly over the next few years as they easily hijack the music channels and show off their radio-friendly melodies.

http://unplugthejukebox.com/2011/04/tin-soldier-just-what-i-needed/

With British Summertime apparently arriving early, what we now need is the soundtrack to those long days on the beach. Look no further than the latest single from Kent four piece Tin Soldiers.

“Just What I Needed” has a complete summery vibe. The verses recall latter day Manics before a killer chorus that Feeder would be proud of kicks in unceremoniously. Trust me, once it’s in your head it won’t leave in a hurry. This is upbeat, commercial pop-rock at it’s best. You can imagine a video being shot on a sunkissed beach for this.

Songs like “Just What I Needed” are made for blasting out of the stereo whilst driving along with your mates on a gorgeous summers day (much like today!). Listen to this without singing along….go on….I dare you!

Never Enough Notes - Tin Soldiers / Just What I Needed

http://www.neverenoughnotes.co.uk/wordpress/2011/04/tin-soldiers-just-what-i-needed-180411-on-the-run/

Hmm. I'm getting a very strange sort of déja vu here. And it's not that I've heard this song before, it's more subtle than that. It's more like I'm sitting on the school bus in 2002, maybe 2003, and it's playing on the radio, or something like it anyway, and maybe it's a bit sunny, and I'm nodding along and probably thinking about girls and homework and how unfair everything is, and...

Sorry. Where was I?

Apparently, the number of girls who scrawled Tin Soldiers across their chests hit triple figures last year. Which, well. You know. Fair play. I didn't realise that a sort of Feeder / Sum 41 crossbreed-type business was floating everybody's boats. Maybe my finger isn't as on the pulse as I thought. Or maybe, dear God, I'm actually getting old. No, surely not.

This review might seem a bit disjointed. It's largely because I'm very ambivalent about this song. On the one hand, it does sound like the last eight or nine years didn't happen. It also sounds a lot like Feeder and Sum 41. And it's pop rock, a genre with which I have a rocky, semi-abusive relationship. But on the other hand, the production is good, with appealingly crunchy fuzz guitar and big drums, and it's got a nice sort of catchiness to it. And although the singer really does sound loads like Grant Nicholas, I like Grant Nicholas. So you can almost pretend that you're listening to Feeder, and that it's not 2011, and everything isn't disappearing rapidly down the toilet.

On that score, I think I'm going to let Tin Soldiers get away with it. Because they make me think I'm listening to Feeder in 2002. And all the ghastly stuff that's happened since 2002 hasn't happened. Obviously all the ghastly stuff that happened before 2002 did happen, but I'm fourteen years old in 2002, and therefore don't care about anything that's not me. So it's fine.

An awesome review of our album Telling Tales @ Rock Kent!

http://www.rockkent.com/2011/04/tin-soldiers-2/

Tin Soldiers

It’s a truth universally denied that each generation thinks it invented sex. There’s probably a couple of reasons for this. One: it’s often difficult to empathise with people who are different to you on such a deeply intimate level. Two: no one likes to think of their parents at it.

And the same is true for boredom and dissatisfaction. Many a teenager will think they were the ones who discovered boredom; that they were the first ones to realise exactly how unfair the world really is – despite bucket loads of evidence to the contrary. Witness the I can’t get no satisfactioneering of the 1960s, the punk of the 70s, Mancunian miserbleness in the 80s, grunge of the 90s and the emo onslaught of the first decade of the new century.

And so to Tin Soldiers who wear their disillusioned hearts on their collective sleeves with pride throughout their album, Telling Tales. Theirs is a heavy rocking sound mixing a plethora of US punk bands (Blink-182, Sum 41 and any other band with a number in their name), Foo Fighters and Generation Terrorists through to Everything Must Go era Manic Street Preachers.

As with many a band a misunderstood malcontents, Tin Soldiers like to thrash out their misery in the loudest possible way. What’s the point of being fed up if you can’t leap around, create an ear bleeding noise and enjoy yourself a bit while you’re about it? The result is a riot of sound with the occasional impassioned rock ballad (see “Just About Us” and others) thrown in for good measure.

It’s a big-big sound with big sounding James Dean Bradfield vocals on tracks like “Word’s Got Out” and “Just What I Needed”. A thrashing guitar is never more than an inch away and the songs race along so fast and furious that Vin Diesel might consider calling it a day.

The themes of the songs are fairly interchangeable. A fairly decent summary of the whole album can be found on “The Nothing Song” with its repeated mantra of “nothing’s changed it’s all the same/it’s all the same and nothing’s new” and other lyrics about feeling nothing.

You can find numbness and weariness of sameness throughout the record. “Pull The Trigger” opens with the line “it’s the same as before/just done in a different way” while “Day By Day” is about the fear of fading away and a need for peace. Meanwhile “Five By Five” continues the theme of restlessness and disillusion with lines about not fitting in and “calling for change”.

And when change does come, it’s usually not of the good variety. “24 Hours” and “Just About Us” are about the agony of a stagnating relationship finally breaking down completely.

Other songs, meanwhile, are just about a vague search for answers. You’ll find it there in “Wait For You”, “Telling Tales” and again in “Day By Day”. Lines like “looking for answers to the things we’re never told” abound throughout the album. It’s a record of restlessness and yearning for something better.

Even when the mood gets a little brighter in “Just What I Need”, there remains a sense of the intangible. There are lines like “it’s just what I needed” where “it” is neither defined nor explained. We’ll never know what “it” is. And maybe neither will Tin Soldiers.

There’s nothing particularly new in the music or lyrics here, which is perhaps fitting given one of the themes of the album. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. There’s enough thought and craftsmanship here to deserve many listens, and the variety in sound and texture of the songs provides both floor fillers and (slightly) more meditative numbers for solo listening.

Following a few listens, Telling Tales turns into a bit of a grower. The fusion of themes of despair, longing and desire for change emerge from a chrysalis of apparent sameness into something rather more powerful – almost moving.

After such a serving the crowd were left to digest and savour the flavours as the next band, Tin Soldiers, prepared their own menu of music. I had never heard of the band (as is the case with most bands for me) but people I had spoken to had held them in high regard and that gave me something to anticipate. Well, if someone stuck a bowl of 6 scoopings of cookie dough ice cream with double cream, hot chocolate fudge sauce and a flake to boot, I would be over the moon and drooling like dog over a freshly cooked sausage.

With their first song, the Tin Soldiers delivered nothing less, filling the the small holdings of The Walmer with a lively, crisp array of polished notes and good strong vocals. Their song “Wait For You” was a notable highlight to the night and it reminded me of Feeder in the good ol’ days. But I didn’t have time for reminiscing, as it was time to wield my camera and freeze frame this exciting young group.

By the end of the night the Walmer Castle was laden with people, all of whom were in high spirits and calling for Tin Soldiers to do encore after encore. Today had been a fantastic day for me, and tonight was just the icing on it.

"Each track really is a finely-constructed piece of work. There doesn't seem to be any filler and while its clear the band are influenced by modern rock sounds the band manage to create their own sound.

Utilising tuneful and strong backing vocals provides a real clout to the overall vocal sound. The lead vocals suit the rock sound very well and provide a credibility with the heavier tracks as well as the more emotional moments.

The band play around with the rock genre, so you get a good helping of punchy beats, along with softer tracks and ballad moments. Musically the band don't settle for one beat, one strum pattern, one way of singing. There is so much variety thrown in that you only really get the full value from the disc with a second, third or fourth listen. Lyrically the album is strong too. The most impressive thing is the catchy nature of the majority of the choruses. It's like the album was built for big live performances where the crowd would be able to catch onto the tracks really quickly.

For a general album the disc is pretty impressive

For a first album it's mind-blowing.
